Julia Landauer, a partner of Girls For A Change, will be competing on the newest season of Survivor on CBS premiering this week! At the age of 20, Julia is a NASCAR driver (the first to ever hail from NYC!) and student at Stanford University where she is majoring in Communications and Engineering. Julia is a unique brand ambassador, breaking virtually every traditional stereotype associated with motorsports.
Girls For A Change was able to snag an exclusive interview with Julia before Survivor: Caramoan - Fans vs. Favorites airs this week!
How did you get inspired to apply for Survivor?
“I saw it as a challenge; the strategic aspects are what drew me to apply. It’s a trust and mind game. It seemed like a good fit for me. I sent in a video and was very excited to find out I was accepted.”
How are you prepping for the show?
“I watched previous episodes and studied the challenges. I physically prepped myself by running in sand and ate pasta and desserts to increase my calorie intake. I also practiced making fires because fire is so important. In addition to prepping for the show, I still had to go write papers, take exams and go to class.”
What are your fears going to the island?
“I’m afraid of the dark…it’s a phobia I have. I also worry about other people’s strategies going to the island. And I wonder if it would be different if I was older. Will my strategies be different now than they would be if I did it a few years down the road.”
What do you think it will be like being the youngest woman on the show?
“I want others to know that young people can do well in this competition too. I think young people tend to be criticized on the show but I think being young has its advantages. I might not seem like a threat to others but I think I have lots of strategies going into the competition. And I want to be a role model for young women.”
What’s your mindset going into Survivor?
“I don’t know what to expect. I’m going in with a direction but keeping an open mind.”
What would you like to take away from being part of Survivor, aside from the prize?
“The experience; the luxury of being able to leave world for a period of time. I look forward to immersing myself in the intensity of the game. I know there will be an emotional toll, nothing will be familiar, but I intend to stay strong.”
What strengths do you think you bring to the team?
“I bring insight into people and how to make a team stronger without being pushy. This comes from racing and school. I can help steer people in a certain direction without imposing and being a threat.”
What will you miss most?
“Food, my support system of my family and friends.”
We wish you all the best, Julia! Thank you for your continued support of Girls For A Change. Please join us in supporting and cheering Julia on for the win. Survivor: Caramoan- Fans vs. Favorites premiers on February 13 at 8pm on CBS!
