Saudi Arabian girls will be allowed to play sport in private schools for the first time in the latest in a series of incremental changes aimed at slowly increasing women’s rights in the ultraconservative kingdom.

Saudi Arabia’s official press agency, SPA, reported on Saturday that private girls’ schools are now allowed to hold sport activities in accordance with the rules of sharia law. Students must adhere to “decent dress” codes and Saudi women teachers will be given priority in supervising the activities, according to the education ministry’s requirements.

The decision makes sport once again a stage for the push to improve women’s rights, nearly a year after two Saudi female athletes made an unprecedented appearance at the Olympics.
—

This is a piece for Delaware Today about young girls losing interest in science, technology, engineering and math related studies. The state’s schools and businesses are hoping to turn all this around. I love it when I come up with a few sketches that I still want to use for something and this was one of those times. A big thanks to AD Kelly Carter!

This story caught my eye when first flipped through the April issue of Seventeen. I love love so much about this- that Meghan looks like a real girl*, that they say that girls can do anything a guy can do, that they mention how few girls play varsity football. I love that Meghan tells her own story. It’s her voice, printed in a national, hugely popular magazine. This is a big statement on the part of Seventeen and I’m so excited to see that they’re publishing stories like this. It’s a step in the right direction for a magazine that still has a long ways to go.

-alice

*i too hate the “real women have ___” stuff, what i mean is that she looks like someone i’d pass in the hall at school, not a professional model, which is so so refreshing

“So my amazing daughter, Emma, turned 5 last month, and I had been searching everywhere for new-creative inspiration for her 5yr pictures. I noticed quite a pattern of so many young girls dressing up as beautiful Disney Princesses, no matter where I looked 95% of the “ideas” were the “How to’s” of how to dress your little girl like a Disney Princess…We chose 5 women (five amazing and strong women), as it was her 5th birthday but there are thousands of unbelievable women (and girls) who have beat the odds and fought (and still fight) for their equal rights all over the world”

- Jaime Moore, Not Just a Girl
